Sydney Sweeney has undergone a significant physical transformation for her role in the new boxing biopic, Christy. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), has been met with critical acclaim and is already generating awards season buzz. To embody the legendary boxer Christy Martin, Sweeney gained over 30 pounds, trained for months, and performed her own stunts, enduring concussions and bruises.

The Grueling Transformation

Sweeney’s physical change was a major undertaking, guided by a nutritionist, a weight trainer, and a boxing coach. She increased her calorie intake with high-calorie meals, including a “PB&J diet” of sandwiches and milkshakes, to keep up with the intense training required for the role. Sweeney was determined to make the fight scenes feel real, even staying up late after 12-hour shoot days to train.

Beyond the Ring: A Story of Resilience

Directed by David Michôd, the film delves deeper than just the boxing world. It explores Christy Martin’s turbulent personal life, including her marriage to her controlling trainer, played by Ben Foster. The story, which is based on the Netflix documentary Untold: Deal with the Devil, blends Martin’s triumphs in the ring with her harrowing personal struggles. Christy Martin herself was a frequent visitor on set, providing encouragement and adding to the authenticity of Sweeney’s performance.
