A surfer has died from his injuries after a fatal shark attack at Long Reef Beach in Sydney, Australia. The incident, which is the first of its kind in the city in over three and a half years, prompted the closure of several beaches. The victim, who has yet to be identified, was surfing with friends when the attack occurred about 100 meters from the shore. Despite being pulled from the water by other surfers, he had already lost too much blood and died at the scene.

Police and a witness described the aftermath of the attack, noting that the victim had suffered “catastrophic injuries.” A nearby surfer reported seeing the man’s lower half “significantly attacked” and saw a lifeguard waving a red flag to order people out of the water.
